I found this lovely, forest green, velvet pillow sham at a recent trip to IKEA. It’s the perfect shade of green for Christmas decor so I decided to give it a simple update perfect for the holidays.
This zippered sham only set me back $7.00 and was easily stuffable with a standard down filled bed pillow. I snagged one straight from our bed! Total cost of this project factoring in the sham, felt, and thread is approximately $8.00. Steal a pillow from your bed or add that cost on top. 🙂
Here’s how it’s done.
To make the deer silhouette I simply pulled out some white felt from my craft stash and traced an image I printed from online.
Unzip your sham and secure the felt with pins.
Stitch around the outer edge of the felt making sure to keep the bottom layer of the sham out of the way (You don’t want both sides of your sham sewn together!).
Tips:
1. At corners where you need to make drastic changes in the direction of the stitching stop your machine with the needle down in the fabric, lift the presser foot and rotate the fabric. Lower the presser foot and begin sewing in the new direction.
2. move and replace pins as needed to keep them out of the way of the sewing machine needle. You wouldn’t want to break a needle in the middle of your project.
Simple, cheap, stunningly festive results!

Jessica, I love, love, love… your deer silhouette! I was hoping I would find a tutorial with a deer image, and this one is just perfection! I do have one question, can you link up the deer image you used and how were you able to print it out on 4 sheets of paper? (sorry….that was two ?s…) 🙂
Thank you so much,
Tracy
