We have plans to turn the loft in our master bedroom into my craft room and evening office space. The room has been (and currently is) our catch all DISASTER room. Ready to see a bit of it?
Here’s a peek at one corner. A total mess. Believe me, this isn’t the worst part of the room either! A few weekends ago we started cleaning up and turned that awkward nook you see above into a spacious built in storage pantry.
we picked up these 2 oversized pantry doors for free off of Craigslist. They quickly became the center of our design plan. I can’t take any credit for the build except for making the decision to have it flush to the existing banister wall. My husband took measurements and decided how to build the shelves. We had the boards cut at Lowes so they were ready to install when we brought them home. Here’s a few pictures to show you the project in progress.
To start, my darling husband cut and pulled up the carpet and pad and removed the trim. He also painted the walls white before putting up the shelves.
Next came a frame for the bottom shelf.
In went the shelves and supports.
To finish off the basic structure, boards were added to trim out the front.
The entire built-in was painted white and we left the cabinet doors the chocolate brown stain they came with. I dug out two ceramic tear drop pulls I picked up a while ago from Hobby Lobby and we loaded her full of craft and decor goodies.
To appreciate the real difference the built in makes here’s a side by side before and after.
Now that wasted space is functional and beautiful!
Craft room to-do list:
- sort through rediculous amount of outgrown baby clothes and pass along most of them
turn corner into built-in cabinet- plank walls
- paint walls
- paint railings solid white
- create super awesome air vent cover (in the works!)
- build mantle for gas fireplace
- rip out builder grade tile around fireplace and replace with stone or brick
- make curtains
- create a set of room divider curtains to block off view of exercise equipment
- rip up carpet and lay wood (or wood look) floors
One project down, 10 or so projects to go! 😉

Don't you just love Craigslist 🙂 Love what you did with the space so far and can't wait to see the rest of it! I know these things take time though. Also, I just noticed that your BEAUTIFUL vanity (that you found in the TRASH!) was featured on MMS – congrats!!! One man's trash is another man's treasure indeed…

That is amazing, beautiful, and so useful! I am always thrilled to see somebody else's "mess", I get intimidated by all the homes that look like nobody actually lives in them. Mine is always a mess!

Great way to add function! I'm thinking a bold pattern stenciled over that white would really pop & complete the look. Kudos! Btw – you mentioned the vent covers…have you been to HobLob lately? They have smaller versions of the sheet metal (in more designs) and with the 40% off coupon are a fraction of the price you'd pay at a hardware store. No tin snips needed! Hey Jessica,
I saw your to do list and have to tell that my "wood look" floors are the best! After 6 years of sand, dirt, dogs feet, and who knows what else they still look brand new. No scratches, dents, or nicks. I would recommend them for the ease of maintenance. I wish I could remember the brand but it has been awhile.
Best,
Erin
