In the fall a coworker of my husband’s thought we might like some wood cheese boxes to craft with. We removed the lid from one and turned it into a rustic chalkboard. We used a white vinegar and steel wood stain to stain the sides and inside of the cheese crate lid.
Some parts of the inside did not stain because of cheese oils that had soaked into the wood. Since this is the back side of the chalkboard we didn’t worry about it but a quick sanding would most likely have solved the issue.
On the front we used wood filler to fill in the cracks and smooth out the surface. Then it was sanded and painted with three coats of chalkboard paint.
After the final layer of paint is dry, rub the side of a piece of chalk on the surface to prepare it for writing. Wipe it clean and it’s ready to go.
Hopefully I can get my hands on some more crates! They are perfect for crafting and best of all FREE!
