Cross Stitch Dresser

When I stumbled upon the beautiful colors and patterns of Eline Pellinkhof I was immediately inspired.  You may have seen her cross stitch rose wall mural floating around Pinterest.  It’s gorgeous!  While reading her blog I was even more drawn to the green, gray, white and cream colors of her work below.

After painting an old dresser pure white I had the perfect candidate for my own mural.  I must admit I’ve had the dresser painted for months but I kept dragging my feet deciding how to go about this project.  What scale should the pattern be?  Should I paint a rose?  What color(s) would look best?

I found some Zig Woodcraft paint pens on clearance at the craft store and the color was chosen, Antique Gold.

A trip to Ikea and a towel set later provided the basic pattern I chose to use!

VÅRLIGT Dish towel IKEA Cotton/linen blend with high absorption capacity.

I free handed the design in pencil and then traced with my gold paint pen.

  12. Hi, I love the look on the dresser(very cleaver). Can you give me a little more detail as to how you did this? Did you buy the cross stich and hold it up against the dresser? I am not clear on how you did this. Can you please email me with a little more detail on how to do this? I didn't understand what the towels had to do with the project. Thank you

  13. Sorry the post was unclear. The design I used was from the towel. I changed it a little bit as I went to lengthen the stem and because I messed up counting the rows and stitches and didn't want to redo my drawing. I just used the stitches on the towel as a template and wanted to give credit for the basic design. I started at the bottom corner and just drew one stitch at a time (in pencil) working my way up and over. I tried to keep the stitches as straight as possible above and beside the stitch before. You could do this with any simple cross stitch pattern that will fit in your space. I'd say my stitches are about 1/2" x 1/2". To determine the stitch size I wanted I counted how many stitches I needed for the longest part of the design (in this case it was vertical). I divided the number of stitches by 2.5 to find out an approximate number of stitches per drawer and then decided I had space for no larger that a 1/2" x 1/2" stitch. You really have to eyeball it and decide based on your stitch pattern and space, which is why I recommend drawing in pencil first. Another option would be to cut a large piece of paper the size of the space you are covering and mark out places for knobs, keyholes, etc and draw your pattern on the paper before the furniture. Hope this helps! If you give it a shot I'd love to see what you come up with.

  21. after the initial painting of the dresser it only took about 30mins. Used a pencil to draw the design (x's) and then I used a paint paen marker to trace. Pretty easy after you decide on the design and placement!

  28. I think by introducing cross stitch as a painting pattern you've started something. Not new but old is new nowdays. Putting the design on the project could be done with a cross stitch pattern and a projector. Might be easier to transfer the pattern and make it the size you want with that kind of method. Just an idea to try.
    Love how your dresser turned out with the pattern on it in cross stitch. Great project.

  30. What a great idea. I don't have a projector otherwise I might have used it. maybe one day I'll have one and I could crank out some dressers with a bunch of different stitch patterns!

  43. This is amazing! What a genius idea. When I looked at the close-ups, I totally thought the cross-stitching was bare wood, and I was all, how did she strip just the X's?!?!?!

    Now I see it is gold paint. BRILLIANT!!!

  54. Hi! I love this – just found you on MMS. It's so funny – just this morning I was telling my husband how I created a cross stitch design on a pillow when I was in my early twenties and how I thought it would look great on a piece of furniture. And – there was your project!!!
