Who else is smack in the middle of a cold snap? Freezing temps, frigid breezes, snow? Whether you’re emphatically waving your hand shouting, “me, me me”…or sighing and resistantly nodding, yes (like me)…this little cutie DIY is for you!
Happy, fun, cute, and most importantly warm!
If you’re ready for spring colors and temps, but are still in the middle of winter weather, do yourself a favor, and make yourself a cute springy colored pom pom hat.
First things first, you will need a plain knit beanie.
I happened to have a pile of vintage beanies lying around (a perk of buying my grandmother-in-law’s house). If you don’t already have a hat in hand there are lots of inexpensive, cute colored, knit beanies on Amazon.
Here’s some Amazon affiliate links to some of my favorites:
- Knit Low Slouch Thermal Beanie: white, splatter white, splatter washed blue, & mauve
- Slouchy Beanie: hot pink (marbled), hot pink (solid), golden yellow, bright yellow, light pink, kelly green, sky, light gray, & white
- 8.5″ Plain Beanie: white, heathered gray, & olive
If you do happen to have a vintage hat in need of a spruce, be sure to clean up the top first. This could include tying up loose ends or removing homemade yarn pom poms that have seen better days.
Next, you’ll need a new furry pom pom topper. I loved the cute colors in this 10 piece faux rabbit fur pom pom set (affiliate link)! They even have little loops which makes them super easy to attach to your hat.
To round off your supplies you’ll need yarn (I suggest trying to match the yarn as closely to the hat color as possible), a yarn needle (affiliate link), and some scissors.
I pulled the yarn most of the way through the hat and tied the end around a good half inch of the top of the hat.
Loop the pom pom onto the yarn before bringing the yarn back through the hat.
Sew the yarn through the pom pom and hat several times and then finish by looping the yarn and tying it off.
That’s it! So simple and quick!
And…
Oh my goodness, don’t the furry pom poms make these plain knit hats just the cutest thing ever!
So what do you think?!
Could you use this quick DIY to add some happy to a cold wintry day!?
Stay warm friends!

Sad to say we barely had any winter, didn’t get to wear most of my nice new warm sweaters (Herbergers on great sales) or scarves I bought. Our winters are getting more mild and yours more intense, sorry. When we first moved here in August/2004 we had wonderful cold, snowy winters. Last 2 winters have been big disappointment to me.

Your hats are wonderful and beautiful. Love fuzzy pom-pom’s. I look awful in hats but they sure feel good when it’s brrrr outside/did wear themwhen we lived in MT.
In 1992 we moved from San Diego to 20 acres in MT, got cold and snowy there but I loved it. Lots of 25-40 below zeros during the day, yup. Was alone a lot as Mr.furry was over road trucking.I went with him as often as I could so experienced lots more places with even more snow and cold- like the Dakotas.
Happy Spring and Easter
Hope it warms up for you soon.,Your little guyis sure a cutie.

We’ve had a fairly mild winter in MD but are currently in the middle of our first substantial snowfall! The big storms always seems to happen in March for us.
