You guys!! I cannot believe how much the studio has changed in the last 4 weeks! The room doesn’t even look like it’s part of a garage anymore. YAY!!!
If this is your first visit to the Petal + Ply blog or you haven’t had a chance to stop over in a while you may have no clue what I’m talking about. So let’s catch up.
We’re currently working on transforming an 18′ x 11′ room in our garage outbuilding!
We are sharing our renovation project weekly as part of the One Room Challenge™. The ORC is a biannual challenge where bloggers and designers around the web complete a room redo over the span of 6 weeks. Every Wednesday, 20 featured designers share the progress they’ve made in their rooms, and each Thursday, Linda of Calling It Home (the originator of the ORC), hosts a linkup where anyone from around the web can jump in and share their own ORC projects.
This week wraps up the 4th week of the 6 week challenge.
If you’re just jumping in, you may want to go back to our first 3 ORC posts and catch up.
Week 1: The Before & Inspiration
Week 2: The Design Plan
Week 3: Nature’s Reflection Painted Door & Other Progress Sneak Peaks
So what did we accomplish this week?

First and foremost I finished painting and we installed two long open shelves. The shelves are each about 10 feet long. Each wood board already had 3 brackets attached. They’ve been sitting on our wood rack since my husband picked them up at a yard sale for $5/set last year. I had planned on using them somewhere in our house, but since they’re so long we would have had to cut them down. I’m happy to say we were able to leave the shelves completely in tact. We simply taped off and painted the brackets with a clean metal primer and then a gold & brass spray paint combo. The boards were then hand painted in Pure White Satin Enamels™ paint.
We also snatched some collapsible shelving (similar) from our attic and the boys’ closet to provide even more storage and create some visual interest against the all white walls and trim.
The 4 pack of white metal stools I ordered for work station seating also arrived! I really could use 2 more stools since there are 6 work stations, but to save $ I bought only one set for now.
This Rose Gold Pendant Light Kit is ordered and will be arriving this week for the DIY lighting project I have planned!
And, last but not least, I began prepping a fabulous end table I was given by a friend last year. It’s size and shape will make it the perfect coffee table for the loveseat. Any opinions on what color we should paint it?!

- STYLE THE SPACE!
This coming week is really going to be crunch time trying to knock out the rest of the projects so I will have time to style & photograph the space. I will also need to leave time to edit the photos and write the final reveal post. EEK! There may be some late nights in week 5 & 6.
For more real-time sneak peeks of the space stop over and follow us on Instagram. And, of course we’d love to see you back here next week.
We will continue to share our progress here every Wednesday and will be linking up over on the One Room Challenge™ blog every Thursday. The final ORC reveals will be posted the week of May 9th!!
Thank you for following along AND big thanks to our sponsor, Select Surfaces, for helping to make this room a reality!

It’s looking so good!! Are you going to try to overdye a rug? I have a gray rug that I’m considering dyeing, but it’s huge and feels so scary. So I hope that’s what you’re doing to give me courage. 😉
Also, hope you didn’t try painting that table today. Paint will not dry for me today. Ugh!
Jessica says
Oh no! No I didn’t paint today. What a bummer that the paint wasn’t drying. I am not overdying a rug. I am making a rug from dyed drop cloth!
Vineta @ The Handyman's Daughter says
Love those shelf brackets! Your room is looking amazing already. Can’t wait to see the final result!
Jessica says
Thanks Vineta! 🙂
Sarah says
I love the shelving! That turned out great. You’re making good progress!
Jessica says
Thank you Sarah. Hoping the final projects go smoothly and we can get this space wrapped up in time!
Susie says
Love, love, love your new shelves. The gold-brass combo on the brackets is just so perfect. And please…send me that fab love seat. It’s just about the prettiest one I’ve seen in a while. So now we are in the last two weeks. Well…girlie….put the coffee on…late nights are a comin’……LOL ~~ Susie from The Chelsea Project

I have definitely been burning the midnight oil over the last few weeks! So close!
Mila says
I LOVE those shelf brackets. You seem to be in great shape for this challenge!!!! Good job. This space is looking great.
Jessica says
Thank you Mila. 🙂 Hopefully we paced ourselves well and everything will be ready for reveal day!
Jen @ Jenron Designs says
Those shelves are fantastic the gold brackets are the perfect accent for your space. Your space is really shaping up great can’t believe is only two more weeks, eek!
Jessica says
Thanks Jen! The time has gone so quickly!!
Leslie Davis says
Those shelf brackets are super cute. And you know I love everything else already!! Good luck on the rest of your projects.
Jessica says
Thanks Leslie!
Berry says
Go for the coral! The rest of the room is gently soothing colors, and the coral would make a great punch. If you don’t want the punch, I’d do the sage green or white.
Jessica says
Thanks for the input! I already painted one accessory in coral so I decided to pull out the lilac purple from the wall art!
Susanne says
How lucky you were to already have the shelves and a steal of a price too!! I love a good garage sale find 🙂 I am still crushing on that love seat by the way, I really just need to sit on it 😉
Jessica says
🙂 We usually don’t find much at yard sales but I’m so glad hubby found these! They cleaned up nicely!
Tee at Beauteeful Living says
You’ve done so much already, Jessica! Your list is almost all crossed out. Fantastic progress already. Can’t wait to see reveal!
Jessica says
Thank Tee! I feel like we’re almost done. We did decide to scrap one of the shelving projects and paint a wall hung shelf unit we already had sitting around so that lightened the final project load a little bit.
Alison @ Deuce Cities Henhouse says
Those shelf brackets are soooo good. I would’ve thought they really were brass – I’ll have to explore your gold brass paint combo and see if I can recreate it 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you do for your rose gold lighting. Your in the home stretch!
Jessica says
Thank you! I sprayed the entire bracket in gold, full coverage, and then did light hits of the antique brass on top just enough to give interest and variation in the color.
Lisa says
I have so enjoyed your weekly updates Jessica!! Always packed with pretty! Okay those shelf bracket – whatttt? I love them. They are such a lovely little detail, especially in gold against the white. The shelves & brackets were such a great yard sale score! How about a color from your floral tapestry for the table? Coral perhaps, or green?
Jessica says
Thank you so much Lisa! We did end up going with a color in the tapestry. Lilac!
Lindi says
Everything is looking amazing! You’ve done sooo much to the space already! I don’t know what colour to paint your table… something pastel? It’s a great snag though!
Jessica says
🙂 Thank you! We did decide on a pastel – lilac!
Dannyelle says
You’re making great progress. I love all your new shelving, and it’s going to be so great to have so much storage. Great job so far.
Jessica says
Thanks Dannyelle!
