Several years ago we picked up a gorgeous dresser and vanity set.
Both pieces had missing and cracked veneer, broken and missing hardware, & a wobbly falling apart drawer or two. BUT, we knew they had good bones and with a little care and attention they could be as good as new.
The vanity has been cut in two and will soon be redone as an end table set for our daughter’s room.
And the dresser…
Velvet Finishes Furniture Paint supplied us with all the necessary paint materials to give this dresser a beautiful makeover!

To prepare the dresser for paint I started with Velvet Finishes, Ready. Ready is a spray on & wipe off prep product that cleans and deglosses the surface. I love this product! It’s easy to use and works great. Simply coat with spray and then rub away. Easy peasy.
This particular piece needed quite a bit of veneer work. Any bigger chips of missing veneer I filled with wood filler and sanded smooth once dry. For cracked and peeling veneer I gently lifted the veneer enough to pour in wood glue and then placed a heavy object on top to hold it until dry.
There were also a few structural issues to address. The dresser frame as well as one drawer were pulling apart so we glued them up and clamped them back in place. Once dry it was once again a solid piece, good as new!
The cute spindle legs, woodwork details, and glass hardware led me to choose a lovely soft paint color. Velvet Finishes Paint, Mystical was the perfect near neutral shade of mauve.
The entire piece (minus the wood accents on the middle drawer) was given a total of 3 coats of paint. That tends to be the magic number when using a light paint on a dark surface. After the first coat I noticed some places where the dark wood stain bled through the paint. My work around in these cases is to pull out my favorite stain blocker and apply it directly over the areas of bleed-through. Allow the stain blocker to dry and then proceed as normal with continued coats of paint.
Once the final coat of paint was dry I used a sanding sponge to distress the edges of the dresser body and drawers. Lastly, the piece was finished off with Velvet Finishes, Protect. I find the smoothest finish is achieved when applying Protect with a synthetic bristle paintbrush.
Ready for the final reveal!!?!
I just love the softness of the pale mauve color and how well it works with the brown wood accents of the middle drawer.
Mystical is one of Velvet Finishes newest colors and I have to say I am impressed! I can see it pairing well with so many other colors.
