Hello friends! I can’t believe we’re back again with another room redo. For the 7th time, we’ve signed up to participate in the One Room ChallengeTM!
If you aren’t familiar with the ORC, it’s a biannual event where 20 designers, plus anyone who wants to sign on as a guest participant, redo a room in six short weeks.
This year, because of the circumstances our country is facing, the six week timeline has been extended to eight weeks. Shipping delays, store closures, and stay-at-home orders will be a challenge for all of the designers and participants. Our room redos have always been heavy on DIY and upcycle projects so we perhaps are less affected than many others. It will be exciting to see everyone’s designs and projects come together especially given the challenges we all are facing.
If you’re new to the Petal + Ply blog, hello and welcome! I’m Jessica. Currently, I’m a crisis-schooling mother of three elementary-aged children, married to a work-from-home plumbing inspector. Prior to our kids being sent home for virtual schooling, I could often be found making over castoff furniture and decor items, or making plans for our newest renovation project. We live in a Maryland fixer upper “farmhouse”. I say farmhouse because that’s how it originally looked when it was built sometime around 1910. Since then, the porches were removed, a mudroom and large family room were added, and the previous owner changed the exterior to make the home look like a traditional colonial. My husband and I are the brains & braun of all of our home renovations and many of our previous projects can be found here on the blog.
As I mentioned above, we have participated in the One Room Challenge six times!!

Adventuring Entomologist Boys Bedroom
Bedroom Before
A few weeks ago, I shared over on Instagram, that we’ll be redoing our daughter’s bedroom. Over the last 6 years of living in our fixer upper, we’ve tried several time to work on finishing her bedroom. We built this Ikea dresser window seat built-in to help with the lack of storage in her room. I also refinished an armoire to give her even more storage. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, storage has still been an issue. The armoire and dressers have worked well for clothing but not so much for toys, books, and art supplies. We’ve thrown a bunch of extra little pieces of furniture into her room BUT her crochet supplies and little items have been living in cardboard boxes and any nook or cranny she can shove them in. Essentially, the room had become a complete disaster.
Here’s the space we’re working with:
I may have had you fooled with the first styled image but the above image is what her room was looking like right before we started working on it for this challenge.
Yikes!
We’re going to be ditching most of the extra pieces of furniture and working on some better ways to store the items she wants to keep. A new pretty area rug has already arrived and if you can’t wait to see it, I shared a sneak peak over in Instagram.
We will be replacing the chandelier and vertical planks will add texture to both the wall above the window seat and the opposite facing wall on the other side of the room.
Her teeny tiny closet will be getting finished off so we can move her hanging clothes and remove the bulky armoire that is currently housing them.
The Projects
Over the next eight weeks we will be transforming the mess of a room into a serene beachy boho oasis!! Want a little peek at the colors we’re using for a sunset inspired mural for the wall behind her desk?! Most of the room will be white and the accessories neutral so I’m super excited about this fun pop of color.
So far my favorite find for the space is a gorgeous capiz shell pendant lamp. I found it for $10.00 at Restore before all the non-essential shops closed down in our area. At some point the chain and ceiling cap were replaced with new shiny brass so we will be repainting them in an antique brass before we install it in the room.
Let’s look at the project breakdown. (I’ll update the list if new projects get added or if any projects get nixed.)

Thanks Tim. 🙂 I always wanted a window seat as a girl so we were glad her room had the space to give her one!

All of your past ORCs are so cherry and fun that I cannot wait to see what you do with this bedroom!

Thank you so much Lindsey! I’m excited to finally have her room finished. Since we are at home more now it will be great for her to have an oasis to disappear to and get some time away from her brothers.
