Welcome to Week 2 of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge™.
Today’s the day! I’m sharing the design inspiration & plans for our daughter’s Beachy Bohemian bedroom makeover.
I’m excited to give her a space that is relaxing and calming but also light & bright with pops of color to match her creative spirit.
The Plan
Vertical Plank Walls
Two facing walls will be covered in vertical plank and painted white. The first wall houses the slatted (faux louvered) door to her closet and will also have a paned glass bookcase for holding books, art supplies, and decor. The second wall is the one directly opposite which has wall-to-wall built-in dressers with a window bench. The window bench is wrapped in bead-board and the vertical planks will cover the half wall above the dressers flanking the window.
We shared snippets of these walls in our One Room Challenge™, Week One post last week.
Sunset Mural
On the long wall to the left of the the built-in dressers/window seat will be a sunset mural. I use the term mural loosely because what we actually decided to do is paint 4 large bands of color to mimic water and a sunset sky. The green/blue color is painted up the the height of her dressers and then the three peach/pink/coral colors are painted in equal size bands to fill the remaining space. There is also a window on this wall and her desk will remain along this wall. Over her desk right where the blue paint meets with the peach paint will hang a round art deco dresser mirror to look like the sun!
DIY Bamboo Headboard
One of my favorite projects that will be added to her space is a DIY Bamboo Headboard. I’ve been eyeing bamboo headboards for a while and have pinned so many different ones. The one problem though is as much as I love them they are all so darn expensive. Over a year ago (probably 2 years ago) I started brainstorming how I could make one with a similar vibe for much MUCH cheaper. When we decided to go with a beachy vibe for little lady’s room, I knew this was the perfect time to give it a go. I am so pleased with how it turned out & can’t wait to share the tutorial with you.
The headboard will be placed on the wall opposite of the mural. This will allow her to face the ocean sunset as she drifts off to sleep.
Spindle End Table DIY
In order to create a look similar to the Hobby Lobby end table featured in our inspiration image above we will be rehabbing a piece of furniture we already have. We have ONE end table with spindle legs that we will be attempting to dismantle and use as TWO wall mounted end tables. The table has spindle legs and with a little work & paint we’re hoping we will be able to get the look we want while using what we have and saving $$.
Window Shutters
I haven’t completely sold my husband on this idea BUT I love the idea of white shutters on the lower half of her two windows. It will provide privacy while allowing plenty of light in. I also think it feel very coastal cottage and would be perfect for this space. Funny story. We actually have the needed shutters already! When we moved into our house all of the downstairs windows were covered in wood shutters from top to bottom. As we have worked on spaces we have removed the shutters from all of the windows except two. I’m hoping my husband will see my vision and be fine with me painting and reinstalling two sets of shutters back into our house. 😉
Well, I think that covers most of the main projects.
What do you think? Do you think it will all come together over the remaining 6 weeks?
We still have plenty to do.

Thanks. I’m really happy with how our homemade version came out AND best part is the total investment for the supplies needed was (I believe) less than $30!!
